AL13 Baitcast Reel Questions
The AL13 performs best with 10- to 17-pound fluorocarbon or 30- to 50-pound braided line. The spool capacity of 150 yards with 12-pound mono gives you adequate line for most bass fishing scenarios without overfilling. We recommend matching your line choice to your technique — fluorocarbon for crankbaits and jigs, braid for frogging and punching thick vegetation.
While the aluminum frame resists corrosion better than composite materials, we designed the AL13 primarily for freshwater bass fishing. If you do use it in saltwater, rinse thoroughly with freshwater immediately after each trip and dry completely. Saltwater anglers fishing inshore species should consider our sealed bearing models built specifically for marine environments.

Start with the external magnetic or centrifugal brake dial set to maximum and make short practice casts. Gradually reduce the brake tension until you achieve smooth casts without backlash. Heavier lures require less braking force, while lighter baits need more. The AL13's brake system allows quick adjustments on the water so you can fine-tune for changing wind conditions or lure weights throughout the day.
Rinse with freshwater after every trip, especially in muddy or saltwater conditions. Apply light reel oil to the main gear shaft every 8-10 fishing days. Back off the drag tension completely during storage to preserve the carbon fiber discs. We recommend professional service every 12-18 months for frequent anglers to maintain factory performance and inspect bearing integrity.
