The progressive taper starts with an ultra-responsive tip section that telegraphs every nibble, transitioning to a mid-section with enough backbone to handle aggressive hooksets on larger species.
Our engineers tested the blank under load in a climate-controlled chamber at temperatures from 40°F down to -20°F to verify consistent performance across the temperature range ice anglers encounter. The resin system we selected maintains flexibility in extreme cold without becoming brittle—a common failure point in budget ice rods.
Handle design and reel seat engineering
Split-Grip EVA Configuration
The split-grip handle on the 13 Fishing Infrared Ice Rod exposes blank real estate between the foregrip and reel seat, allowing you to palm the carbon directly for maximum vibration transfer. We selected a closed-cell EVA foam that resists water absorption and maintains its cushion even after hundreds of hours on hardwater.
Our custom reel seat uses a cushioned hood and lock ring system that grips spinning reels securely without over-torquing in frigid conditions. The seat is recessed slightly into the handle to lower the reel’s center of gravity, improving balance when you’re working a vertical presentation.
Guide system and line management
Ice buildup on guides is the most common complaint we hear from hardwater anglers. We addressed this with our Evolve guide system, which uses a frame geometry and insert material combination that sheds ice before it can accumulate.
The stainless steel frames are shaped to minimize surface area where water droplets can freeze. Each frame is treated with a hydrophobic coating that causes water to bead and roll off rather than clinging to the metal. The zirconium inserts are polished to a mirror finish, reducing friction that can generate heat and melt ice on the line—only to have it refreeze inside the guide ring.

Common questions about the Infrared Ice Rod
For light power models, we recommend 2-4 lb monofilament or fluorocarbon for panfish applications. The medium-light handles 4-6 lb test for walleye and general hardwater fishing, while medium power rods perform best with 6-10 lb line for pike and lake trout.
The Evolve guides are sized to handle both mono and fluorocarbon without friction issues. If you're fishing in extreme cold below zero, consider dropping down one line class to reduce guide friction and ice formation on the line itself.
While the Infrared is optimized for vertical ice fishing presentations, the blank design translates well to open-water jigging for panfish and walleye from a boat or dock. The short length and fast action excel at maintaining contact with jigs in current or when vertical jigging in deep water.
We don't recommend casting with the Infrared—the ultra-fast tip and short length aren't designed for horizontal presentations. For open-water casting, consider our standard freshwater spinning rod lineup which features longer blanks and casting tapers.
The Infrared focuses on pure sensitivity with an ultra-fast tip action, making it ideal for finesse presentations and bite detection. The Wicked Ice Rod has our Wicked Backbone technology that provides more power reserve in the mid-section for aggressive jigging and fighting larger fish.
If you primarily target panfish and walleye with light jigs, the Infrared is the better choice. Anglers who chase pike, lake trout, or fish heavy spoons will appreciate the additional backbone in the Wicked series. Both use the same Evolve guide system and premium components.

For hub-style portable shelters, we recommend the 26" or 28" lengths which provide enough reach without hitting the ceiling or walls during hooksets. The 24" models work well in ultra-compact shelters or when fishing seated on a bucket.
If you fish primarily in a permanent shack or outdoors without a shelter, the 28" or 30" lengths give you better leverage on larger fish and allow you to work lures through a taller vertical column without repositioning. Consider where you fish most often when selecting length.
The Infrared's reel seat is designed for standard spinning reels, but many anglers successfully pair it with inline ice reels for specialized presentations. The EVA split grip provides a comfortable palm area for inline reel operation.
If you plan to use an inline reel exclusively, verify that your reel foot dimensions match our seat specifications. Some inline reels require aftermarket adapters. For traditional panfish and walleye presentations, we recommend pairing the Infrared with a quality spinning reel in the 500-1000 size range.
