While the 8.3:1 ratio excels in power fishing situations, the adjustable 6-way brake system makes the SLD2 versatile enough for finesse presentations. You can dial back the brake pins for lighter lures like weightless soft plastics or small crankbaits.
That said, we typically recommend a slower gear ratio like 6.6:1 or 7.3:1 for pure finesse work. The SLD2 shines when you need speed and power, so if you spend most of your time throwing jigs, spinnerbaits, or topwater, this reel is purpose-built for that style.
Remove the side plate by pressing the release button and lifting it off. You'll see six white brake pins arranged in a circle around the spool. Push the pins inward to engage braking or pull them outward to disengage.
Start with all six pins engaged and make a few test casts. If your lure is dropping short, disengage one pin at a time until you find the sweet spot. Heavier lures typically need fewer engaged pins, while lighter baits require more braking. We recommend keeping at least two pins engaged to prevent backlash on windy days.
